    Very good
Bought this to replace my desktop elite also from Microsoft.Installation was simple. What I noticed right away is how precise and quick the laser mouse is.Much improvement over the intellimouse explorer 2.0.It's got a magnification button that is a nice feature as it can expand and contract. Also very comfortatable and a good fit with your hand. The keyboard is nice too although not revolutionary. It's your basic upscale type of Microsoft keyboard and what's nice about it is that the keys are white.I prefer white over black. Also the mouse and keyboard are in an attractive silver and grey.It would have been nice if they found a way to light the keys.Anyway,it's worth the price as the mouse steals the show.
Pitiful quality control. Should be 5 star.
I have to agree with many of the other reviews. Overall, this is a very well designed, good looking keyboard. But it has a very serious flaw that is intolerable for a keyboard costing this much. Like others have said the mouse and/or keyboard will lose connection at the drop of a hat. It is not too frequent but it is frequent enough to be unsatisfactory. And it will occur at the most inopportune time, like when I was taking a timed online test to renew a certification. The mouse dropped its connection and nearly caused me to flunk the test. The transmitter is less than 18 inches (clear path) from both the keyboard and mouse so there is no excuse. (It is now acting up as I write this review.)

This keyboard replaced a 4 year old cordless Logitech that worked perfectly until it died a sudden death. I doubt I will last that long with Microsoft at the pace I'm on now. I see now that Microsoft has come out with a Version 2 of this model so hopefully they have corrected this problem. Also in Version 2 they have returned to the standard home, end, insert, etc. format. DO NOT BUY Version 1, maybe give Version 2 a try.

    Perfect
Terrific mouse: Very accurate and the zoom function a great tool. Keyboard has a light touch plus the white keys are easy to see in a darkened room. 5 configurable hot keys plus dedicated ones for mail, internet etc.
Definitely the best desktop set to jump into wireless with
I went wireless with my mouse one time five years ago with a Logitech mouse, and ended up taking it back within a week because it wouldn't work. I gave up on Logitech products after that and decided to stick to Microsoft's wired keyboards and mice lines, finding the Intellimouse Optical to be my perfect mouse for the next four years.

I decided to try wireless again after having good experiences with a wireless PS2 controller (strangely enough Logitech's model) and having no hiccups with it. At first I was just going to go with the Laser Mouse 6000, but after finding desktop set package cost $10 more than the mouse alone, bought the desktop package and took the full plunge.

I haven't had any problems with the keyboard or mouse before beyond the usual set-up signal finding problems, and having to use a piece of scotch tape to stabilize the space bar beneath on its metal rest becausethe peg keeping it attached was too small. It worked fine though and I love this set completely. The mouse has great control and feels comfortable in my hand, with the buttons easily reassignable since I have no use for the magnifying function.

The keyboard is fine besides the modified and curved layout, but I'm getting used to it pretty well. The only thing I'd suggest is better support for left-right scrolling in other programs besides MS because it's intermittent, and having redundancy of the key-lock lights on the keyboard itself, especially if you have the reciever in an out-of-the way place where you can't see if the caps are locked.
    Works Fine, But Has Irritations
Instead of the Logitech MX3100 I wanted, my wife bought me this for Christmas. Perhaps because it's not what I wanted, that's clouding my judgement a tad and affecting my rating (I don't think so, but it's possible).

Anyway, for positives, this keyboard/mouse combo works fine. Functionally, I have no problems with it. The keyboard, though not separated into distinct left/right hand segments like my old Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro, is comfortable and I easily adjusted to it (mostly). The mouse is a bit smaller than my old Logitech MX1000 Laser Cordless Mouse and since it uses regular batteries and doesn't sit in a charger, my desktop is just a wee bit neater. That's primarily because I can place the receiver more out of the way, but also because I no longer have to run yet another power cord from my desk to my UPS. I also prefer the smooth feel and behavior of the scroll wheel's up/down direction over that of the Logitech.

My negatives for this combo are mostly due to preferences. First, and most annoying, the shape of the mouse seems to taper too much towards the top and the material it's made of is pretty slick: it feels like the mouse wants to slip out of my hand when I use it (mostly on the thumb side). Second, I'm not very happy with the placement of the back/forward buttons: they're above the thumb in a way that makes it a conscious effort for me to use them (this is after three weeks). Also, though I prefer this mouse's up/down scroll wheel behavior, I much prefer the Logitech's side-to-side scroll wheel behavior. The only difficulty I have with the keyboard is that it feels more "plasticky" than my old one. This translates into my still losing a keystroke or two (usually capitalizing letters). Note that I'm pretty sure that's a problem with my typing and not with the keyboard losing keystrokes.

Again, this keyboard/mouse combo works fine. All my negatives are purely personal preferences. But, that's why I rate it at only an OK 3 stars out of 5.

EDIT: I've been using this keyboard/mouse combo for 5 months now, and I thought I should update the review. First, and most importantly, I've come to the conclusion that the occasional missed keystroke (usually while capitalizing) is a function of the keyboard, not me. It's still happening. Second, I still haven't gotten used to the location of the back/forward thumb buttons. So, I'd say that's an actual ergonomic problem and not one of my preferences. Given that, I'd lower my rating from 3 stars to 2 stars if I could.
