| I went with this keyboard and mouse because it is made by Microsoft and they usually make good keyboards and mice. Unfortunately that is not the case with this unit. The keyboard has maintaining its connection and the response time is REALLY slow at times. Moreso then with any other keyboard and mouse I have used or own.
I should state that I am a web developer and I spent about 10 hours a day on my computer. For a casual user this system would probably work well, for a hard core user I would recommend something else.
PROS: Comfortable, Good Design and well made
Cons: Response time, loses connection too often for my liking
| | DESKTOP LASER 3000 Wireless keyboard and mouse |
| Purchased it yesterday 8/13/08
Very dissappointed with both keyboard and mouse.
The keyboard is supposed to have lights, it doen't. It relies on an icon that lights on the lower left hand side of the display. Manual is not included. This means to look up something in "help", you must go to programs, look for help, go through the list or search and when found you will need to print it out.
The mouse is far worse! The range is about four feet. Using the default mouse setup, if the magnifier is selected the side button is used call it up. It does not turn off readily because the button and contacts are poorly designed. In my opionion the entire mouse is poorly designed with no tactile feel to the buttons. One very annoying issue is when using the mouse your hand and thumb will rest very close if not on the side buttons. This can cause an unwanted activation of whatever the button is assigned to do. Such as accidently turning on the magnifier and worse, turning it off. The buttons are so sensitive that touching it will cause it to work.
It goes back to the store today!
| | Very disappointing product - avoid this one |
| We bought this for a conference room where we hooked the transmitter up to a docking station. The problem is that the keyboard transmission is intermittent - as you type words, you have to check each individual letter continually, because sometimes the letter doesn't transmit. Sometimes you have to hit the letter several times, and if it is in the middle of a word, this is very distracting and annoying. And this problem happens all the time - not just once in a while. Very disappointing product.
| | UPDATE 12/12/08: Comfortable keyboard and mouse....BUT |
| UPDATE: After the post below, it started screwing up again. I think it's a software issue, as others have mentioned. I'm running XP Pro in a corporate environment, but all necessary drivers and software components are in place, so I'm at a loss. Keyboard still rocks though. I've gone back to a wired mouse, a Microsoft Optical Blue. Oddly enough, the scroll doesn't work AT ALL, and it used to. Intellipoint perhaps???!! Thanks Microsoft.....d'bags!
After reading tons of reviews about the issues many folks have had, I felt the need to weigh in. I use the MS Wireless Keyboard 3000 and Wireless Laser mouse 5000 at my job every day, and do lots of typing and surfing for research and documentation input. I've had the set for about a month now.
CONS
First of all, remove any versions of Intellipoint prior to 6.3. Trust me, this will help the stuttering and random actions of the mouse. I could barely use the mouse at all with Intellipoint 6.2 installed, and the autoupdates don't fix the issues. I had to totally unistall 6.2, and downloadn Intellipoint Pro 6.3 before the mouse was usable, and it still hangs occassionally or you have to click to get the scroll to work on some pages when surfing. The keyboard itself works great, although no indicator lights of any kind on it. It does rely on the Intellitype software to show you via popups in the toolbar if your Numlock or Fn key is activated. The mouse or the wireless USB receiver seem the be the problem children here. As stated, version 6.3 of the software (use the Pro version..) for the both keyboard and mouse do help. Be sure and configure the keyboard for YOUR specific needs also...the default assignments on the upper bank of keys is a bit stupid.
PROS
Great feel to the keyboard, solid keystrokes, no clunkiness.
| | Good performance at a decent price |
| I purchased this system based on two criteria:
1. Previous experience with it in a work environment
2. Price
The set up process is simple. Load the driver CD, select your keyboard and mouse models and off you go. The software loaded in less than a couple of minutes. Plug the receiver into a USB port. As soon as I did that the keyboard and mouse were recognized and ready to use. Simple!
Quality met my expectations as I had experience with this exact set up in my office. Keyboard is comfortable with good sized keys that were better placed than the wired keyboard it replaced.
The mouse is nice but feels a bit awkward in my hand. I think it is just smaller than the ones I am used to. I do have two criticisms of the mouse. First, the scroll wheel feels artificially heavy. As odd as it sounds it takes effort to scroll with the wheel. Again, nothing that I haven't been able to live with but odd all the same. The other issue is the button on the right edge of the mouse. In its standard configuration the button activates the magnifier. I find that it is far too easy to accidentally activate the magnifier. So, then you must click again to deactivate. To correct this I simply configured nothing to happen when I click the button. An inconvenience but again noting that would put me off of making this purchase.
As for range and latency I have had no issues whatsoever with latency or range. I do know from my experience that the effective range of the mouse and receiver is about 4 feet. If the mouse and keyboard are within three feet of the receiver you won't have any issues.
Pros:
Price
Fast easy set up
quality look and feel
Cons:
Questionable mouse ergonomics
